Minnie Darke says Happy Birthday Aries
To all the Aries in my real and imagined lives, and beyond,
Happy birthday – the world now celebrates the festival of you!
In my real life, you’re the ones who make up your mind instantly that we’ll be friends forever. You show up as the glorious hot-heads, the friends who speak their mind forthrightly and never leave me guessing what they’re really thinking, and the brave ones who’ll step right into the fray, even if it’s not your fight. Also, you’re the best fun when it comes to a serious game of Scrabble or Bananagrams.
In the pages of Star-crossed, you show up as Joanna Jordan, mother to the romantic hero, Nick Jordan. Joanna Jordan – owner-operator of Edenvale’s Uppercut hair salon, the freakishly accurate goal attack for the Edenvale Stars, and a two-time Miss Eden Valley title-holder – is something of a good fairy in the life of the novel’s main character, Justine Carmichael. Not only does she give birth to Nick Jordan, she also convinces Justine’s mother to allow her (aged seven) to watch Star Wars, even though it’s rated PG. Another Aries in the Star-crossed universe is the restaurateur, Dermot Hampshire, owner-operator of Cornucopia bistro and the proprietor of the Un-ewes-ually Good sheep cheese company. Ambitious, and one might even say, rambunctious, Dermot was huge fun to write.
Happy birthday, you feisty and headstrong ram people! May the next year bring you a deluxe Scrabble set on a lazy susan, a win in your workplace footy tipping contest, a groovy tattoo (if only a fake one), plenty of good sex and your very own copy of a quirky book called Star-crossed.
